Praise from First Minister as Thenue Housing unveils 200 new homes at former Games village

THENUE Housing has unveiled its BIGGEST-EVER new homes boost for the east end of Glasgow.

Two hundred homes have been bought by Thenue for its tenants at the former Commonwealth Games Village in Dalmarnock.

This week Thenue’s Chief Executive Charlie Turner called the development a “once in a lifetime” housing boost due to its sheer size as the First Minister praised the entire development.

Thenue tenants have spent the last few weeks moving into their new homes and more will follow in the coming weeks.

The former Games Village has been transformed into much-needed housing creating a new and vibrant community which is a lasting legacy of Glasgow’s hugely-successful Commonwealth Games last year.

After the athletes moved out, the homes were refitted with kitchens and now Thenue & two other housing providers have begun letting around 400 of the homes for rent. Two hundred and fifty private homes have now been sold through City Legacy – a consortium of housebuilders which built the development.

Such is the significance of the housing development, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Councillor Gordon Mathieson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, both attended the official launch.

They toured the development meeting local residents and seeing at first hand a selection of the new homes.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “This award-winning new housing development provided a fantastic home for the sporting stars in Glasgow last summer and I am delighted to be able to meet some of the new residents who will be making their new home in this community. The transformation and regeneration of Dalmarnock is an important part of the lasting legacy of the Games. With the Athletes’ Village, the new community hub, the Cuningar Loop woodland, the sporting venues, businesses, jobs and investment, the East End can continue to thrive.”

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “This is a special day for Glasgow, as we mark the first residents of the Athletes’ Village. The Athletes’ Village will always have a special place in the hearts of Glaswegians when we think back to the fantastic Commonwealth Games, but today we look to the future, and an exciting new neighbourhood for Glasgow.”

Charlie Turner said: “The lasting legacy of the Commonwealth Games in terms of housing and the infrastructure which it created will benefit this city for many years to come. Rarely have housing associations like ourselves been able to deliver such a significant amount of homes in one go. By purchasing these properties we are delivering brand new homes for local people and at the same time are helping the Dalmarnock community to thrive. It is undoubtedly a once-in-a lifetime boost for housing in the East End.”

Glasgow City Council will also build a primary school and nursery school on two sites within and beside the Athletes’ Village.

Thenue tenants Theresa and John Collins have now moved into their four-apartment mid terraced house with their two teenage children Michelle (19) and John (16) describing it as "just wonderful."

They lived previously in Baillieston in a much smaller property and have also lived in Robroyston. Their new home over three floors offers exceptional space and the family praised the partnership which has delivered hundreds of new homes for families.

John said: "Our new home is really exceptional. There is also something very special about moving into a brand new home. The Commonwealth Games were magnificent for the city and the fact that all these new homes have been created in the games village really is making a big difference to people's lives. As a family we are very grateful to Thenue, Glasgow City Council and City Legacy for making all this possible."
