THENUE 'ON THE BALL' AS IT DELIVERS EAST END FOOTBALL BOOST

Young footballers in the east end of Glasgow have really scored a winner by receiving a welcome cash windfall from Thenue Housing.

Shawfield 1996s - so named because the youngsters were born in that year or later - are now sporting new kit after the housing association bought them for the team.

The money means the youngsters will wear Thenue's branding on their kit.

The boys play in the Glasgow and District Football League but impressively, also learn about the game itself with visits to professional matches, providing a thorough knowledge of the game.

Coach Ben Queenan said: "We are very much aware of the good work that Thenue Housing does in the community and particularly grateful that on this occasion we are a recipient of that generosity.

"In these difficult financial times, sponsorship can be hard to come by. This kind of sporting activity helps the east end community and provides an important football focus for local teenagers.

"Running a football team for young boys costs money and we want to give them the very best experience possible. The new kit will be worn with pride."

A a gesture of their appreciation the team have handed over a framed shirt to Thenue which will be displayed at its London Road offices. It was presented to Chief Executive, Charlie Turner.

Lawrence McCabe, Community Regeneration Manager at Thenue Housing, said: "Thenue is delighted to help Shawfield 1996s. After a summer of sporting excellence it is highly appropriate that we are supporting a local football team and wish them every success."
