INFO FROM GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL RE: INDUSTRIAL ACTION

Last updated: 12.20pm, Tuesday 6th September 2022 by

As reported in the media, Glasgow City Council planned strike action will take place in two stages with the first strike due to start on Wednesday, August 24 and finish on Thursday, September 1. The second stage of industrial action will begin on Wednesday, September 7 and finish on Saturday, September 10.
Household bin collections and street cleansing services are likely to experience widespread disruption during these times.

Updates will be issued on the Bins and Recycling pages of the council website and we will also publish information on the News and Events page of the council website: www.glasgow.gov.uk Updates will also be provided through the council’s social media channels.
Residents who are due to receive a collection of a household bin from the kerbside outside their home during the dates identified for strike action should not present their waste for collection on those dates. Bins will be emptied on the next scheduled date on their collection calendar.

If any collection days for a resident do not fall within the dates for strike action, then they should present their bin as normal. Dates for collections can be found on the Collection Days page of the council website https://www.glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=16567
The council also anticipates that collections from communal bin areas will be affected and there might also be a delay in returning to normal collection schedules.

Residents are being advised to try and minimise the amount of waste that they produce or compact their waste wherever possible.
For example, non-recyclable plastic packaging can fill large amounts of space in your bin, but can be broken up with scissors. For recycling, please flatten and break-up boxes, but also rinse cans and plastic bottles, then crush before storing within your home wherever possible.

If bins for general waste become full, residents are being asked to store their waste at home if they can. If rubbish can’t be stored within the home, residents should double or triple bag this waste before placing it next to their general bins, either in a communal bin area or by your own home. Residents should also avoid using recycling bins for general waste as this may lead to further delays in those bins being collected.

At this stage, our Household Waste Recycling Centres are expected to be closed on the days when strike action is due to take place and will not accept any waste or recycling.
We expect street litter bins, including those in parks, and public recycling points to be affected by the strike action. If a bin is already full then members of the public are being asked to try and find another bin that can take their waste or take their waste home and store it appropriately.

At present residents can continue to make requests for a household bulky waste collection via our online form on our webpage at www.glasgow.gov.uk/bulkywaste and they will need to register at www.mygov.scot/myaccount/. It is likely that uplifts will not take place as normal during the period affected by strike action, but customers will be emailed directly on arrangements for collection.

Our Contact Centre won't be able to provide further information about the industrial action, other than to reiterate the information contained in this post. They will not be able to provide information about when household or communal refuse or recycling will be collected or take complaints about the impacts of industrial action. Residents are being asked to keep the phoneline free for those who need help with other services.

During the time of the strike, several online reporting forms, and parts of the myglasgow app will also be unavailable.
The Contact Centre team will be available to help residents with things such as clinical collections, graffiti removal, pest control, street lighting, city parks queries, trees, and allotments.

The strike action is due to conclude on Saturday 10 September 2022 and, due to the number of collections that could be missed during this time, it is likely to take a number of weeks before services return fully to normal. We know this will be a difficult period for residents and visitors and plans will be put in place to catch-up on affected services as quickly as possible.

Commercial waste services provided by the council are also likely to be disrupted by the strike action. We will endeavor to collect waste from businesses as quickly as possible but businesses who receive a service from the council are also asked to store their waste appropriately wherever possible.
